Possible fees for card payments

Written by Sofia

When using cards issued by Finup, the final amount charged may differ from the purchase amount shown by the merchant. This may be due to additional card processing fees charged by the partner bank depending on how the transaction is processed. Such fees may depend on the transaction details, payment currency, and the merchant’s location.

What fees may apply

1. Foreign Exchange Fee (currency conversion fee)

This fee may apply if the payment currency differs from the card currency. Finup cards are issued in US Dollars (USD).

If a payment is made in another currency (for example EUR, GBP, or PLN), the purchase amount is automatically converted to USD at the exchange rate set by the payment network.

You can check the exchange rate here:

💡 If you are given the option to choose the payment currency during checkout, we recommend selecting USD. This may help avoid additional conversion and possible fees.

2. Crossborder Fee (international transaction fee)

A Crossborder Fee may apply to payments where the merchant is registered outside the US and/or the transaction is processed in a currency other than USD.

To avoid this fee, both of the following conditions must be met at the same time:

  • the merchant is registered in the US

  • the transaction currency is USD

If at least one of these conditions is not met, the fee may apply.

Examples:

  • the merchant is located in the US, but the charge is processed in EUR

  • the currency is USD, but the merchant is registered in another country

  • the merchant is located outside the US and the charge is processed in a currency other than USD

In all such cases, the transaction may be classified as international and a Crossborder Fee may apply.

💡 In many cases, this fee can be avoided by using a US billing address during payment, if such an option is available on the merchant’s side.

3. Transaction Fee (transaction processing fee)

A Transaction Fee is a fee charged for processing a card transaction.

This fee may be charged for any card transaction, including:

  • payment for goods or services

  • linking a card to a service

  • verification charges initiated by the merchant

  • other card authorization requests

This fee cannot be avoided when making transactions, as it is part of the card transaction processing carried out by the partner bank.
